Sick care vs. Health care
When patients come to see me, I always explain the two phases of care: symptom care (a.k.a. chiropractic acute care) or supportive and preventive care (i.e. “chiropractic wellness care”).
Most people start in acute care – they have a symptom that they want to be resolved, such as headaches. This model is akin to sick care, in that you have a physical issue that you need addressed and resolved. It’s analogous to seeing your MD when you get an infection.
Once the symptom is resolved, people can choose to move into a supportive and preventative care phase in order to optimize their function and prevent symptoms of pain and dysfunction from occurring in the future. This may at first seem counter-intuitive – because why would you pay for someone to check your alignment and adjust something that is non-symptomatic (i.e. not causing you distress)? Short answer: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
Pain as a Symptom
The symptom of pain is often one of the later notifications your body gives you that something isn’t right – sometimes it is even the lastnotification it gives you. You can have joints that aren’t moving well and muscles that are at suboptimal tension levels LONG before your body starts talking to you via pain. Pain is a multi-factorial event that is influenced by physical factors (joint and muscle dysfunction for example), chemical factors (the biggest of which is inflammation) and emotional factors. But a thorough discussion about pain is for another post. Suffice it to say that pain is one of the worst hallmarks of optimal function! Moreover, people tend to ignore their pain until it becomes reallybad, thinking that it will resolve on its own. While this is sometimes the case, ignoring your pain sets you up for that same pain to recur, and for you to lose more time from work, your family and friends, and the things you love to do.
The Vehicle You Drive Through Life
If you think about your car, you take it in for regular oil changes and check-ups (or you should) even when there are no overt problems you know of. Why? Because you recognize that you drive your car in all sorts of conditions and, after time, wear and tear can set in and impact function. A quick check can prevent major engine damage due to old oil, and a tire re-aligning can help your car perform much more efficiently and effectively.
Your body is the vehicle that you were given to ‘drive’ through this life – and unlike the car parked in your drive way, you only get ONE body. This means you need to take good care of it, so that it will continue to function well and allow you to do the things you love well into old-age! Just picture it – can you see yourself dancing at your grandchildren’s wedding? Or hiking through the Mayan Ruins? Or even just enjoying a relaxing sunset on a warm summer night, and feeling good while doing so… We use our bodies ALL DAY, ALL THE TIME. Chiropractic supportive care helps to re-align the tires so to speak BEFORE problems and symptoms such as pain arise, or before they have a chance to fester and take deep root making them difficult to resolve. You deserve to feel fabulous, and part of how to make that happen is to give your body some good TLC – chiropractic is a fantastic means through which to do so.
